How to Do a Simple Funeral

A simple funeral approach

A funeral can seem complicated and become complicated. Know that it is possible to create a simple funeral.

The primary approach is to separate the main components of a funeral: disposition and funeral.

  • Disposition: burial or cremation
  • Funeral: memorial service which may include a viewing

What complicates a funeral

A viewing or wake creates complexity because it involves:

  • Pressure: Decisions must be made quickly for the funeral service and any subsequent graveside service.
  • Time constraints: People must make expensive travel arrangements on short notice.
  • Need for body preparation: Funeral homes require embalming prior to viewing. The body will also need to be made up (with make up) and dressed.

A viewing is not mandatory. It has pros and cons. For some people, it provides closure. For others, it can be traumatic. Some people prefer not to be viewed upon death. It’s a personal choice.

An alternative to a formal viewing in a funeral home is an informal viewing either at home or at the mortuary. However, with a crematorium viewing, there are caveats: the body will not be made up or dressed up; the mortuary may limit visitors to immediate family; etc.
