Once a Body is Released
Most immediately, it is necessary to specify where the body will go, once released, for final disposition. Unless plans were made prior to death, most people will contact a funeral home or crematory to retrieve the released body. Entities that deal with death, like hospitals, may release a body to a funeral home without input from the decedent’s legal representative in order to conserve space. The legal representative has a right to move the body 1) to a venue allowed by state law and 2) using a method allowed by state law. Even though many states allow people other than death care professionals to transport a body, it is probably prudent to use death care professionals who are aware of any related laws and have the proper equipment.
