A vault is a burial container in the ground into which a casket is placed. It serves to protect the casket and to keep the ground from sinking onto the casket. A vault can also contain an urn.

A grave liner is similar to a vault but open on the bottom.

While burial containers aren't required by law, they may be required by a burial ground for maintenance.
