A crypt is a structure (traditionally stone) for the burial of a body. Historically, crypts could be above or below ground. For example, some churches had crypts beneath the apse. Crypts today are built above ground and are typically for family use.

A crypt may be stand-alone or adjacent to others. A mausoleum is an example of the latter.
