Most Americans know little about death care. Interestingly, as recently as 150 years ago, families handled their own death care with occasional help from friends or someone in the community with death care experience. During the Civil War, undertakers and embalming became prevalent as families needed to retrieve loved ones killed in battle. The trend of using death care providers continued beyond the Civil War into our present time.
