Cast Plaque Information

Architarium»Cast Plaque Information

What is cast bronze?

Bronze is a metal alloy (combination of metal), consisting primarily of copper and tin. It is cast when it is heated to a liquid state, poured into a mold and cooled.

Does "solid bronze" really exist?

No. Bronze is a combination of metals and there are a variety of combinations.

Why buy cast bronze as opposed to engraved bronze?

Cast bronze weathers better in exterior locations because it uses a different alloy (or range of alloys) compared to milled (engravable) metal.

Do cast bronze plaques have a clear coating?

They should always have a clear polyurethane exterior coating unless you intend to allow the plaque to oxidize. A clear coat will delay eventual oxidization. If the plaque oxidizes, you have two choices: keep the oxidization or remove it.

Is a natural patina possible?

Yes. A cast plaque can be allowed to oxidize naturally. We also offer a verdigris patina finish. But the plaque needs to be finished with a clear coat after the patina is achieved or the plaque will continue to oxidize.

Does cast bronze require maintenance?

To restore the original appearance of the plaque, some maintenance is required. More maintenance is required for cast plaques in exterior venues.

Is cast aluminum more durable than cast bronze?

No. It actually oxidizes faster. However, it is less expensive. We offer cast aluminum as well as cast bronze.

What types of images can be cast without additional cost?

Line art can be cast under certain circumstances. Contact us for technical requirements.
